The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women's Soccer team opened up their season on the road on Saturday as they traveled to take on Montreat College. UC put forth a valiant effort as they took Montreat into double overtime, but fell to the Cavaliers by a final score of 3-2.
The Patriots took the lead nearly immediately as the game got started in the first minute as sophomore Briana Parrish (Paris, KY) put in a goal from close range giving UC the 1-0 lead which they carried into halftime.
Montreat took that lead early in the 2nd half with 2 goals within the first 8 minutes giving the Cavaliers a 2-1 advantage, but with a strong offensive attack from the Patriots, sophomore Ana Derrico (Brazil) tied the game up 2-2 with a goal from the inside of the 18-yard box. The game ended with Montreat scoring the game winning goal just one minute into the 2nd overtime period.
Head Coach Joe Townsend commented, "As I told the ladies after the game, I have never been prouder as a player or a coach to be a part of a team that put so much into a game. The result did not go in our favor, but the performance and attitude was exemplary."
Cumberlands will open up their home schedule on Wednesday September 5th as they face Bryan College in Williamsburg. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
