The University of the Cumberlands football team over the John Bland era has earned a lot of awards and recognition. They have won conference championships, All-American awards, All-Conference awards, and many other awards. So when a player achieves special recognition it comes as no surprise to a program that is becoming a household name in the Mid-South Conference.
Brendan Kelly (Lexington, KY) was named an Honorable Mention All-American by the Collegiate Developmental Football League (CDFL) who sponsors the 2012 Division-II vs. NAIA Preseason Senior Bowl teams. This is a game that pits the best of the NAIA against the best of the NCAA Division II. The game is scheduled for December 15, 2012 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Brendan Kelly is one of the senior leaders for the Patriots as he has excelled as a safety on defense and unbelievable special teams return man on punts and kick returns. He has been named a 2-time Mid-South All-Conference 1st team selection. Brendan was also named on the Preseason NAIA All-American team. Head Coach John Bland knows the hard work Brendan puts in every year as he stated, "Brendan has been a solid player for us. He is well deserving of this award. I am excited to see him perform at the level he is capable of."
The CDFL is a football organization devoted to providing skill development and game playing opportunities for post high school and post college players between the ages of 18-25. The CDFL is nationally recognized for its development of 3 Senior Collegiate level All-Star football games: the "D3 Senior Classic", the "FCS Senior Scout Bowl", and the "D2 vs. NAIA Senior Showcase". All are examples of the CDFL's efforts to provide football scouting opportunities for players within this age range. Recently, the CDFL has expanded its efforts into Europe, providing post collegiate football opportunities for players to play, be scouted and sign professional contracts in the ever expanding European "American football" market.
The Patriots will begin their season on September 1st, 2012 against Belhaven at James H. Taylor II Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:30 pm.
