Ever since Head Coach John Bland has been at the University of the Cumberlands (UC), he has put his teams in contention every year to win the Mid-South Conference (MSC) title. He has even been able to guide them to 4 straight conference titles, a feat that speaks for itself. So it should come as no surprise last week when the coaches voted the Patriots to finish second in the MSC East behind Georgetown.
Georgetown is predicted to finish first in the MSC East which to Coach John Bland is not a surprise.
"Georgetown is picked 3rd or 4th in the nation. I voted for them to finish first," said Bland.
Georgetown is coming off of a season where they finished in the Final Four of the NAIA playoffs. Even though the Tigers enter with such high praise, Bland isn't ready to give them the crown. "I like our chances with all the guys we have returning," said Bland. "I think we can contend for the Conference Championship." Look for the Patriots to do battle in the middle of the season when they face off against the Tigers.
As for the rest of the conference, it looks to be as tough as ever. UVA-Wise hopes to have a season better than last as they are picked to finish 3rd. Cumberlands bitter rival Union College is picked to finish 4th with the University of Pikeville picked 5th and Kentucky Christian University 6th.
This will be a different schedule for the Patriots after leaving the MSC East 2 years ago to join the West division as they transition back. The Mid-South Conference has been one of the toughest conferences in the nation and has proven to be one of the most competitive. Cumberlands will have a tough schedule and every game should be a battle.
The Patriots open the season on September 1st at home against Belhaven at 1:30 PM at James H. Taylor, II Stadium.
