The University of the Cumberlands (UC) softball Patriots fell to Tennessee Wesleyan College (TWC) on Friday,but came back on Sunday to sweep the Buffaloes of Milligan College on Senior Day.
In game one of the double header on Friday, the Bulldogs of TWC got a head start on the Patriots with two runs in the bottom of the 2nd. They then extended that lead with a string of hits in the 4thto push another four runs across the plate. The Patriots rallied against the Bulldogs, coming back to score two in the top of the 5thand another in the 6th. TWC held down the Patriots offense in the 7thand came away with the win defeating the Patriots 3-6 in game one.
Action in game two of the double header was again started by the Bulldogs as they drove in a run in the bottom of the 1stinning. The Patriots answered back in the top of the 4thwith a smash over the fence by senior Ashley Wampler (London, KY) to take the lead by one, but the Bulldogs would tie the game up in the bottom of the inning at 2-2. Not giving in, TWC took the game from UC in the 5thwith a pair of runs batted in. Final for game two went down 2-4 and another loss for the Patriots.
On Sunday, the Patriots would salute their seniors as they hosted Senior Day festivities and played two great games against Milligan College. UC played a perfect combination of offense and defense to secure two big wins on their home field.
In game one, the Patriots put the first and only run on the board in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI triple by Angela Steuer (Miamisburg, OH) to knock in Ashleigh Hopf (Dayton, OH) giving UC a 1-0 lead. That would be all that Steuer would need as she pitched a fantastic game, allowing only 3 hits. Erin Sears (Williamsburg, KY) went 3-3 in the game, with Brittny Lovelace (Middletown, OH) and Steuer also putting a hit in the books.
In game two of the double header, Milligan put the first run on the board early in the first inning. The Patriots allowed two more runs by the Buffaloes in the third, but added two of their own with back to back RBI singles to cut the lead to 3-2. In the bottom of the 7thinning, Patriot Tabitha Benson (Cookeville, TN), Rachel Akins (London, KY), and Wampler would all come up with clutch hits to pull even with the Buffaloes, and a sacrifice fly by Jessica Speake (Lancaster, KY) would claim the clutch RBI giving the Patriots the 4-3 win to sweep Milligan in the doubleheader.
The double header sweep was a sweet finish to senior day, in which the Patriots recognized 7 seniors: Ashley Wampler, Carrie Cobb, Angela Steuer, Lindsay Meadors, Emily McIntire, Carrie Morse, and Erin Sears.
The Patriots will be back on action on April 17thas they hit the road to Saint Catharine College for a double double header beginning at 3 p.m.
