University of the Cumberlands (UC) Patriot softball took to their home turf on Wednesday, March 6th in a double header against the University of Pikeville Bears, placing one win and one loss on their season record.
In game one against the Bears, the Patriots scored an early four runs in the first inning. Pikeville then answered with five runs in the next two innings, and by the end of the sixth inning, the two teams were tied at 8 runs each. Cumberlands pulled together for a last run in the bottom of the 8th inning to pull out a 9-8 win.
Brittny Lovelace (Middletown, OH) led the Patriots going 2-5 from the plate with a double and a run scored. Rachel Akins (London, KY) also went 2-5 from the dish with a double, a run scored, and 2 runs batted in. Tara Wells (Latonia, KY) came up big with a game tying 2 run home run in the 7th. Angela Steuer (Miamisburg, OH) got the win in game one going 8 innings allowing 8 runs on 13 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4.
In game two, UC again placed the first run of the game on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Pikeville tied the Patriots in the fifth inning, and scored another four in the sixth, totaling the final score to 5-1 after seven innings of play.
Rachel Akins went 1-3 in the ballgame with a double. Roma Maloney also went 1-3 in the ballgame with a run scored. The loss went to Carrie Cobb (London, KY) who went 5 innings allowing 4 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 1.
UC improves their overall schedule to 5-28 and their Mid-South Conference (MSC) record to 4-11.
The Patriots will have six opportunities in the upcoming week to improve both their overall record and their record in conference play. They will travel to compete against West Virginia Tech on April 9th, and then host Georgetown College on April 10th in a double header starting at 3:00 p.m. On April 11th the Patriots will travel to Wilmore, KY to face Asbury College in a double header beginning at 4:00 p.m.
