On Saturday, March 31, the University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men and Women's tennis teams traveled to Pikeville, Kentucky to take on the University of Pikeville (UPIKE) Bears. Both teams battled hard as the women came out on top winning 7-2; however the men were unable to find their rhythm falling to the Bears 6-3.
The Patriot ladies were led by sophomore Neesha Thirumalaichalvam (Selangor, Malaysia) in singles action as she defeated Shae Criswell 6-0, 6-1. Lindsay Collette (London, KY) defeated Danielle Clark 6-0, 6-3. Erin Hart (Corbin, KY) defeated Hayley Kincaid 7-6, 6-0. Kaitlin Daugherty (Clinton, TN) won her match by forfeit. In doubles action, the women went undefeated in all three matches. Thirumalaichelvam and Hart defeated Clark/Kincaid 8-2. Shelby Muff (Union, KY) and Kaitlin Smith (Erlanger, KY) defeated Criswell/Andrea Tobar 8-3. Collette and Daugherty won the third doubles match by forfeit.
The men went to work from the first serve, but fell short to the Bears. Those clinching wins were Juanjo de la Llera (Spain) as he defeated Dmitry Babenkov 6-2, 7-5. Danilo Garcia (Quito, Ecuador) was also successful as he defeated Sergei Krasinihov in a very heated match 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. These two Patriots paired up in doubles action to defeat Babenkov/Krasinikov 8-4.
The Patriots will be back in action on Saturday, April 7, 2012 as they travel to Georgetown, Kentucky to take on the Tigers of Georgetown College. Match time is set for 12 PM.
