For the second straight week the University of the Cumberlands (UC) senior pitcher Jason Rodriguez (Corpus Christi, TX) earned the Mid-South Conference (MSC) Pitcher of the Week for his outstanding performance on the mound.
"I am happy for Jason," said UC Head Baseball Coach Brad Shelton. "He has pitched well in the early going and is a great competitor. I'm sure he'd be the first to say that his teammates have played great defense behind him."
Over the weekend Rodriguez got the nod for game one of the series against West Virginia Tech. As has been the case all season, Jason held the Tech hitters off balance all afternoon carving them up one by one. He was able to go the distance pitching all 8 innings allowing no runs on 3 hits with 11 strikeouts in picking up the win.
This was Rodriguez's third straight complete game shutout improving to a perfect 3-0 on the season. With the complete game shutout, he extended his scoreless streak to 22 straight innings. For the season he owns a 1.86 ERA and has only allowed 6 runs. In his 29 innings of work, Rodriguez has struck out 36 batters.
"Jason does a great job pitching to contact and working quick," said Shelton. "We need him to keep working hard and lead our staff as we begin conference play."
The Patriots are 8-9 overall on the season and are back in action on Wednesday, March 7th, when they travel to Barbourville, KY to take on #12 Union College with first pitched scheduled for 2:00 pm. On Friday, March 9th, the Patriots open up MSC play as they host St. Catherine College at 2:00 pm. The series picks back up on Saturday, March 10th, with a double header starting at noon.
