The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women's Wrestling team traveled to King College in Bristol, Tennessee this past weekend to compete in the WCWA Women's College Nationals. The team placed 5th overall out of 12 teams and had several women compete very well overall.
One Patriot who did very well during the competition was Opelia Felipe (Rome, GA) in the 101 kg weight class. Felipe ended the day by placing 3rd overall and ended up going 3-1 with one pin and two decision victories. Sherri Berube (Corbell, MI), in the 116 kg weight class, ended the day in 8th place overall after going 2-3 on the day including one pin. Also in the 116 kg weight class, Andrea Hughes (Sahuarita, AZ) went 3-1 including two wins via pin and fought her way to the National Championship match where she fell to Joey Miller of OCU, earning 2nd place. Liza Gutierrez (El Paso, TX) represented UC in the 130 kg weight class and ended the day with an 8th place finish going 2-3 in the tournament.
Kerstin Harmon (Bellefontaine, OH) fought hard in the 136 kg weight class earning a 6th place finish after going 2-3 with one pin. Allyson Blessman (Walsenburg, CO) represented the Patriot ladies in the 143 kg weight class and ended her tournament in 8th place after going 1-3 overall. Sydnee Nelson (Kingsland, GA) did very well in the 155 kg weight class representing the Patriots on the podium when she earned a strong 2nd place finish after going 2-1 on the day. In the 191 kg weight class, Katy Yoder (Beavercreek, OH) placed 7th for the Patriots going 3-2 on the day scoring two pinfall victories and a tech fall win as well.
The Patriots will travel to the Dave Schultz International Open in Colorado City, Colorado for their next match on February 3rd, 2012. Matches are set to begin at 9:00 am.
