
The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women Soccer Team began the first round of the Mid-South Conference (MSC) Tournament strong with a 7-4 win over Shawnee State University. The Patriots improve their record to 8-10 on the season with the win over the Bears.
The Patriots played strong offense in the first half, scoring three of their seven goals within the first 30 minutes of play. Junior Danna Stringle (Ontario, Canada) struck first for the women to lift the Patriots to a 1-0 lead. Freshman Marcela Calienta (Brazil) scored second with Stringle striking again less than a minute later to put up a third goal making it 3-0.
In the first 2 minutes of the second half, freshman Janina Schultze (Germany) scored the Patriots first of their remaining four goals.
Danna Stringle (Ontario, Canada) and senior Jessica Posey (Harrison, OH) led the Patriots in scoring with two goals each. Those two goals for Posey were the first of her Patriot career. Marcela Calienta, Fernanda Ramirez (Chile), and Schultze all had one goal apiece. Calienta also had one assist.
Goalkeepers Brittany Gadd (Mercer, PA) and Brooke Bennett (Forest Hill, MD) together tallied up 4 saves in the game.
UC is seeded 4th in the MSC Tournament. The Patriots will continue their post-season in the semifinal round of the tournament against #1 seed and NAIA #1 Lindsey Wilson College on Wednesday November 9th. The game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. at MSC Tournament host, University of Rio Grande.
