The University of the Cumberlands (UC) swimming teams traveled to Sewanee, Tennessee on Saturday October 22ndto compete against Sewanee: The University of the South. The Patriots men's team dominated their competition resulting in 147 points to Sewanee's 123 points. The Patriot women raced hard with 138 points but fell short to the Tigers who came away with 143 points.  Altogether, UC won 19 out of the 32 events. 

Winners for the Patriots include:

  • Women's 400 Medley Relay (4:13.69) – Lizzy Horn (Wheat Ridge, CO), Melissa Peplinski (Spokane Valley, WA), Hanna Wright (Corbin, KY), Julia Maxie (Gainesville, GA)
  • Men's 400 Medley Relay (3:37.74) – Wes Miller (Largo, FL), Jake Wood (Cicero, IN), Sam Hoeferle (Cicero, IN), Sam Huntley (Littleton, CO)
  • Julia Maxie – 200 Free (2:05.85); 500 Free (5:32.82)
  • Lizzy Horn (Wheat Ridge, CO) – 100 Back (1:03.11)
  • Zach Johnson (Ashland, KY)– 100 Back (55.61); 200 Back (2:02.47)
  • Melissa Peplinski (Spokane Valley, WA) – 100 Breast (1:08.61); 100 Free (56.45); 200 Breast (2:30.89)
  • Joe Brinkman (Commerce Township, MI) – 200 Fly (2:02.14); 200 IM (2:03.50)
  • Wes Miller (Largo, FL) – 50 Free (22.64); 100 Free (49.06)
  • Hanna Wright (Corbin, KY) – 200 Back (2:20.01)
  • Sam Huntley (Littleton, CO) – 500 Free (5.05.73)
  • Sam Hoeferle (Cicero, IN) – 100 Fly (53.44)
  • Women's 400 Free Relay (3:51.65) - (Hanna Wright (Corbin, KY), Allison Greenwell (Louisville, KY), Callie Ethington (Bardstown, KY), Julia Maxie (Gainesville, GA)
  • Men's 400 Free Relay (3:22.51) – Jimmy Hall (Barbourville, KY), Zach Johnson (Ashland, KY), Wes Miller (Largo, FL), Joe Brinkman (Commerce Township, MI)
 

Head UC Swimming Coach Eric Skelly noted, "We had a great meet on both sides. They are really tired right now and training extremely well. I am very proud of how well both teams performed."

In addition to numerous wins, the Patriots qualified four swimmers for the NAIA National Championships in March, 2012 and 8 bonus cuts were also achieved.

Automatic qualifiers were: Sam Hoeferle (Cicero, IN)- 100 Fly, Lizzy Horn (Wheat Ridge, CO)- 100 Back & 200 Breast, Melissa Peplinski (Spokane Valley, WA)- 200 Breast, and Jake Wood (Cicero, IN)- 200 Breast.

Swimmers who made bonus cuts were; Joe Brinkman (Commerce Township, MI)- 200 Fly, Sam Hoeferle (Cicero, IN)- 200 Fly, Allison Greenwell (Louisville, KY)- 200 Back, Wes Miller (Largo, FL)- 50 Free & 100 Free, and Hanna Wright (Corbin, KY)- 100 Free, 200 Fly, & 200 Back.

The Patriots will return to Sewanee, TN on November 4th& 5th where they will compete in the University of the South Invitational.
