The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women's Wrestling Team competed at Oklahoma City University on Sunday for their season opener. Unfortunately, UC finished the day with a record of 1-5, where they competed against Simon Fraser University, King College, Wayland Baptist University and the number one ranked team in the nation Oklahoma City University. The Patriots fought hard during the day, but unfortunately were just unable to come away with more victories.
The Patriots were able to come up with a big win over the Wayland Baptist Gold team by a score of 30-6. Milagros Zamora (Miami, FL) pinned her opponent in a short time of 1:21 with a score of 4-0. Liza Gutierrez (El Paso, TX) pinned her opponent also in a short time of 1:51. Other Patriot ladies that secured wins by forfeit to help UC with the victory were Opelia Felipe (Rome, GA), Adreanna Barrera (Dallas, TX), and Sherri Berube (Corbell, MI).
Cumberlands toughest competition was against the number one ranked girls wrestling team in the nation Oklahoma City and although they lost, one of the ladies preformed quite well. Cianah Hee (Honolulu, HI) won by decision over her opponent with scores of 4-3, and 6-6 which gave her the win, because she defeated her opponent in the first two of the three periods wrestled. The Patriot ladies efforts, however, were not enough to win against Oklahoma City as they lost by a 44-3 margin.
The Patriots next dual was against Wayland Baptist, where it came down to the wire. However, the Patriots were unable to pull off the win and fell by a score of 25-18. Some Patriot ladies came out with victories including Andrea Hughes (Sahuarita, AZ) and Cianah Hee. Hughes won by a technical fall and was able to go through her entire match without having a single point scored against her, which resulted with a score of 6-0 and 6-0. Hee dominated her opponent and pinned her in an amazing time of 0:20.
In the dual against King College, two Patriots were able to standout above the rest. These ladies were Cianah Hee who won by decision with a score of 1-0 and 6-0 and Sydney Nelson (Kingsland, GA) also won by decision with a score of 2-0 and 3-1. Although they were able to come up with victories for the team, it wasn't enough and the Patriots as they fell to King College in a final score of 35-7.
Andrea Hughes and Cianah Hee were the only two ladies who were able to win and score points for the Patriots in their dual against Simon Fraser University (SFU) and the Oklahoma City Black squad. Hughes was able to win by decision with scores of 0-4, 5-1, 2-0 against SFU and a score of 3-1, 1-0 over Oklahoma City Black. Hee in turn was able to pin her opponent in 1:09 against SFU and win with a decision of 3-0, 2-0 over Oklahoma City Black. The final score of both duals unfortunately ended with the Patriots losing 28-8.
The Patriots will be back in action as they travel to Meza, Arizona to compete in the Sunkist International Open. Following that competition, the Patriots will take part in the Missouri Valley Open on November 5th in Marshall, MO.
