The University of the Cumberlands (UC) will be represented at the University World Team Championships in women's wrestling when Patriot Gabrielle Henry (Columbus, OH) steps onto the mat. USA Wrestling will be sending strong teams in all three Olympic styles to Torino, Italy, October 26-30.
The United States teams will feature numerous athletes who have had previous international success on the Senior and age-group levels. Many are currently college students, or recent college graduates.
Earlier this summer Henry competed in Akron, Ohio during the World Team trials to attempt to qualify for the World Championship Team. Three of the United States women's freestyle team members come from the WCWA women's college rankings including Henry.
The women's freestyle team will be coached by USOEC head coach Shannyn Gillespie of Marquette, Mich. and Link Davis of Oklahoma City, Okla. Davis is an assistant coach at Oklahoma City Univ., and was a 2010 U.S. Senior World Team coach.
Gabrielle has always been a prominent athlete for the University of the Cumberlands women's wrestling program competing in the 51kg weight class. She has placed in the top three at several tournaments during both her freshman and sophomore years at UC and is continuing her history of excellence for her junior year.
"I am extremely pleased with Gabrielle and how she performs here at UC and it does not surprise me that she made World Teams at all," said Cumberlands Head Women's Wrestling Coach Alaina Berube. "She has a lot of talent and drive and our whole team has confidence in her ability to dominate."
