The University of the Cumberlands Women’s Golf team won the Mid-South Conference Spring Invitational Tournament this week shooting 326 and 317 for a two-day total of 643. Campbellsville University came in second shooting 330 and 323 for a total of 653 and Lindsey Wilson College came in third shooting 328 both days for a total of 656.
“Anytime you defeat a Top10 team, it’s exciting,” said Head Patriot Golf Coach Chris Kraftick. “We have had so many chances to beat them this year and have let it get away. On Friday, we were as good as we have been all day on the back 9.”
Leading the way for the Patriots was McKinzie Price (Somerset, KY) who shot 81, 76 putting her in a tie for 1st place. Due to the four-way tie for medalist there was a play off beginning on the 18th hole. Price along with Katie White of Campbellsville, Chelsey Key and Kelsey Joslyn both of Lindsey Wilson took part in the playoff. After playing the first hole of the playoff Key and Joslyn were knocked out leaving Price and White. They played the 18th hole two more times but were still even. They moved to the 10th hole and Price was defeated as White made par and Price took a bogey. Price took second place in the tournament after the playoff.
Emma Cutmore (Essex, England) finished in 5th place shooting an 83, 77 for a total of 160 earning her a spot on the All Tournament team. Laura Beth Harris (Glasgow, KY) and Hannah Moore (London, KY) both shot 163 putting them in a tie for 7th place. Harris finished 78, 85, and Moore finished 84, 79. Rounding out the Patriots scoring was Brittany Napier (Manchester, KY) who shot 94, 101 for a total of 195 putting her in 25th place.
There were several Patriots who competed as individuals. Leading the way for the individuals was Nicole Braden (Powell, TN) who shot 86, 85 for a total of 171 putting her in a tie for 15th place. Katie Akins (London, KY) shot 88, 87 for a total of 175 placing her in 22nd. Kelli Garvin (Catlettsburg, KY) shot 87, 96 for a total of 183 putting her in 24th place. LeAnna Hinkle (Williamsburg, KY) finished with 102, 102 totaling 204 for a spot in 26th. Whitney Blankenship (Racoon, KY) rounded out the scoring finishing with 117, 108 for a total of 225 finishing in 29th place.
This tournament counted as the Mid-South Conference Spring Tournament and earned the Patriots a share of the Mid-South Conference Regular Season Championship Title. In the Mid-South Conference Fall Tournament Lindsey Wilson took first Campbellsville second and the Patriots finished in third. The Spring Tournament was the exact opposite canceling each finish in the fall.
“We played with maturity and poise under a lot of self imposed pressure,” said Kraftick. “This group has worked very hard and deserves to enjoy this win.”
The Patriots will take part in the Mid-South Conference Tournament on April 26th and 27th at Cherry Blossom in Georgetown, KY. For more information about the Patriots or complete results on this tournament visit www.ucumberlands.edu/athletics.
