The University of the Cumberlands Head Baseball Coach Brad Shelton would like to announce the commitment of catcher Roy Garcia of Corning, California.

Garcia is a transfer from Butte Community College and a graduate of Corning High School. At Corning, Roy was a standout player and a member of several championship teams. During his senior season, the team won the Northern Athletic League Championship and the Northern Section Championship. As a senior, Roy was his team’s captain and was named to the All League team. Garcia received the Defensive Player of the Year award all four years of his high school career and was a team captain for three seasons.

At Butte College, Roy was the team’s everyday catcher for two seasons following a redshirt year. He had an outstanding sophomore season being named first team All Conference and the Team’s Most Valuable Player. He was also the team captain.

Coach Shelton believes Garcia can help Cumberlands advance to higher level of competition. “Roy is a catcher that will help take our team to the next level,” said Shelton. “He is good offensively, but his best attribute is his ability to lead a pitching staff. He is a team first guy. His coaches at Butte say he is one of the most unselfish, team players they have had in their program. His toughness will rub off on our young guys. I expect Roy to be a leader the minute he steps on our campus.”

The Patriots ended 2008 with an overall record of 43-16 and a 17-2 record in the Mid-South Conference.
